QFrom Operations to Leadership: Adam Burston’s Journey at UniGreenScheme
Introduction
Adam Burston, Executive Manager at UniGreenScheme, speaks to Sian about his seven year journey within the company and how UniGreenScheme has kept sustainability and teamwork at its core.
Can you tell me about how you started at UniGreenScheme and your first role?
I joined UniGreenScheme seven years ago in a product listing role, working on processing the surplus laboratory equipment coming in. It was a fascinating introduction to the varied world of scientific equipment and the environmental need for our service. I shortly moved up to another role within the customer services side of the business - taking on greater responsibilities, learning about business operations, sustainability initiatives, and the needs of our partners.
What were some key milestones in your career progression?
My journey has been one of continuous growth. Early on in my career I secured a significant sale (still the largest in our history!), and have been fortunate to be able to work very closely with the Directors Mike and Ben to help actualise their vision for the company. Over the years, I've not only had experience in many roles, but as part of key projects that expanded our reach and helped research institutions adopt sustainable equipment management. Now, as Executive Manager, I oversee teams and processes to ensure UniGreenScheme continues to thrive.
How has UniGreenScheme evolved over the last seven years?
UniGreenScheme started as an innovative idea, but today it’s a well-established leader in sustainable laboratory equipment management. It’s been fantastic to see the growth we’ve achieved in building partnerships with leading universities, research labs, and businesses, whilst maintaining our key focus at heart in preventing waste, and helping institutions and labs generate revenue whilst recouping space.
What major industry changes have influenced UniGreenScheme’s growth?
The shift towards environmental responsibility in research has been a game-changer. Universities and labs now prioritise sustainability initiatives, and many have policies that align with circular economy principles. This has created more demand for our services, as institutions look for ways to reduce waste, lower carbon footprints, and maximise budgets.
Why should laboratories prioritise reusing and refurbishing equipment?
Scientific research generates a significant amount of surplus equipment, much of which is still fully functional. By providing lab equipment for reuse, institutions can save money, reduce environmental impact, and support sustainable research practices. Many labs are now recognising that disposing of valuable equipment isn’t just wasteful, it’s also a missed financial opportunity.
What impact has UniGreenScheme had in helping institutions achieve sustainability goals?
Through our work, we’ve helped institutions divert thousands of kilograms of lab equipment from disposal, reduced CO₂ emissions, and saved universities significant costs. We also provide detailed environmental impact reports, allowing institutions to track their contribution to sustainability efforts.
How important is teamwork in professional growth, and how has UniGreenScheme’s team supported your journey?
Teamwork is absolutely crucial in any organisation. At UniGreenScheme, I’ve been fortunate to work with passionate Directors and a dedicated and supportive team, which has been a huge factor in my growth. A strong team provides collaboration, knowledge sharing, and problem solving that helps everyone succeed. Having a support network allows you to learn from others, tackle challenges together, and drive innovation. Success isn’t just about individual effort, it’s about how well you work with those around you. Investing in your team and fostering a positive, cooperative environment makes a real difference to everyone.
Conclusion
Adam’s journey reflects the kind of growth that defines UniGreenScheme’s culture - built on dedication, adaptability, and a genuine passion for making a difference. His story is a reminder that sustainability is powered by people just as much as process, and that the future of the sector depends on experienced, forward-thinking individuals willing to evolve alongside it.
