Python Developer Caerphilly
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced, motivated and highly capable Python Backend Developer to join our small but growing development team at UniGreenScheme and Labduck.
This is a varied development role working across two established and developing platforms, with responsibility for building new functionality, maintaining existing systems, developing integrations and helping shape the future technical direction of the business.
You will work primarily with Python and Django, alongside technologies including Saleor, ERPNext, GraphQL, Git, Docker and PostgreSQL. The role involves working closely with our directors and another developer to understand requirements, solve technical challenges and deliver high-quality, maintainable solutions.
The position would suit an experienced developer who enjoys solving complex technical problems, is comfortable taking ownership of their work and wants the opportunity to influence how platforms and development processes evolve within a growing business.
Working hours are flexible and are expected to be between 20 and 40 hours per week, with the exact number of hours agreed with the successful candidate. Remote working is available, although some overlap with UK working hours is required for meetings and collaboration. Office-based working is also available from our Head Office in Caerphilly.
Salary is £17.00–£21.00 per hour, depending on skills and experience.

About the Role
The role will provide development and technical support across both the UniGreenScheme and Labduck platforms:
- Development: Developing new functionality using Python and Django and maintaining existing platform features.
- Backend Services: Building and maintaining APIs and backend services.
- Integrations: Developing and maintaining integrations between multiple business systems, including GraphQL APIs and third-party services.
- Maintenance and Optimisation: Resolving bugs, improving existing code and identifying opportunities to improve platform performance, scalability and maintainability.
- Technical Planning: Participating in technical planning and architecture discussions and contributing ideas to the future development of our platforms.
- Testing and Documentation: Producing clean, well-tested and maintainable code and creating technical documentation where appropriate.
- Collaboration: Working closely with our other developer, directors and project stakeholders during planning, development and review.
- Workload Management: Managing your own workload and tasks, including areas where there may be crossover with our full-time developer.
The balance of responsibilities will depend on business requirements, current development priorities and the successful candidate’s skills and experience.

Previous experience with every technology listed above is not required, but strong commercial experience with Python and Django is important.
Training and Development
You will be provided with onboarding and training on our platforms, internal systems, business processes and development workflows.
Training and onboarding will cover:
- Our UniGreenScheme and Labduck platforms.
- Our internal systems and business processes.
- Our existing development workflows and technical architecture.
- The integrations between our different systems.
- Our e-commerce and marketplace processes.
- The different services offered by UniGreenScheme.
As you become familiar with the platforms and wider business, you will have the opportunity to take greater ownership of technical decisions, architecture and future development.
About You
We are looking for a motivated and dependable individual who:
- Has commercial experience developing applications using Python.
- Has commercial experience using Django.
- Has experience developing modern web applications.
- Has a strong understanding of REST and/or GraphQL APIs.
- Has experience working with Git version control.
- Has experience debugging and resolving complex technical issues.
- Produces high-quality, well-tested and maintainable code.
- Takes ownership of their work and follows tasks through to completion.
- Can work to deadlines and ensure work is completed on time.
- Can manage their own workload and work effectively without constant supervision.
- Communicates clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
- Has good written and spoken English.
- Can work independently within a remote team.
- Works collaboratively with developers, stakeholders and other team members.
- Can balance speed of delivery with long-term maintainability.
- Is flexible and responsive when priorities or requirements change.
- Is comfortable working in a growing business where priorities may evolve.
- Enjoys solving complex technical problems and contributing ideas.
- Ideally, applicants will have around three or more years of commercial Python development experience, although applications will also be considered based on the overall strength of the candidate’s experience and technical ability.
- Previous experience with ERP systems, particularly ERPNext, Saleor, marketplace or e-commerce platforms, cloud hosting or deployment would be beneficial, but is not essential.

This is a strictly non-smoking position when working from UniGreenScheme premises.
