Hitachi S-4800 Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope with Oxford Ultim Max 40 EDS
This item is sold on behalf of a client where it will be removed from a lab where it is surplus to requirements.
The system has been regularly serviced and was last visited by Hitachi in February 2025. It has seen little use since that service. It is currently installed and has recently gone into an error state relating to the shutter door between the sample chamber and the exchange chamber. The seller believes this may be resolved locally but it may require a Hitachi service visit and, in any case, Hitachi involvement is expected for decommissioning and recommissioning at a new site. It is therefore offered on the basis that it will require service/commissioning work at the buyer’s cost.
System Overview
- Model: Hitachi S-4800 Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM)
- Stage: Type 2 motorised stage (installed c.2008)
- Control PC & Software: Windows 10 PC with PC-SEM (installed 2021)
- EDS System: Oxford Instruments Ultim Max 40 EDS (purchased 2024) with separate PC and software for EDS acquisition/analysis
- Service History: Regular preventative maintenance by Hitachi from 2021–2025 (approx. every six months plus ad-hoc fault visits)
- Last Service: 4–5 February 2025 – 2-day preventative maintenance visit including column bake-out and image stability checks
The seller has confirmed that Oxford Instruments have advised the EDS ownership transfer is straightforward, and they do not charge for transferring registration to the new owner.

Contamination & Use History
- Open-access instrument used predominantly for metal and ceramic powders
- External surfaces can be cleaned by the seller prior to removal
- Column is routinely baked out during service visits and the chamber has been cleaned when deemed appropriate by the service engineer
